Situated 100 yards just off the sea-front, the Ashborne is ideally located for all of Sunderland and the North East’s many attractions. In the immediate area around the Ashborne alone, there are many things to do. Just a short walk away is the recently opened Roker marina, where guests can enjoy the atmosphere, try a range of water sports, or enjoy fine food. Similarly, the National Glass Centre is also very nearby, and offers educational and informative entertainment for all ages - see glass go through the various stages of the manufacturing process and admire some of the best glass exhibits in the world. We are also close to St. Peter’s Church, which is of international historical interest and was the home of the Venerable Bede right back in AD674.
The newly regenerated Sunderland city centre is a short drive or bus ride away, and sports famous name brands alongside small friendly local shops that offer a range of goods and services. The Winter Gardens, a climate-controlled huge greenhouse with exotic plants and walkways, have just been opened, and are set in the landscaped surroundings of Mowbray Park, In the evenings, there are a wide variety of places to eat, drink and relax, including the Sunderland Empire Theatre which frequently hosts top shows, musicals and ballets.
Your stay with us may coincide with a Sunderland AFC home match, in which case you can experience top quality Premiership football with the unrivalled atmosphere of the Stadium of Light, voted the best and most friendly ground in the country. Even if it isn’t a match day, stadium tours are available - sit on the dugout, admire the spectacular stadium and hope the smell of sweat isn’t lingering in the dressing room!
Stay with us during the summer and marvel at the one of the biggest annual air shows in the country, which takes place along the sea front from the Ashbourne. The Washington Kite festival hits also hits the skies in July - offering a lively mix of kites, music and cuisine. Further a field, our guests enjoy great days out at the Beamish open air museum, a fantastic recreation of life at the turn of the century, or visit Hadrian’s wall, a world heritage site, as well as the stunning Northumberland coast.
